From Molecules to Organisms (W02)

TermDefinition
Structure The physical 3D shape or layout of a molecule or cell.
Function The job, role, or action that a molecule or cell performs.
System A group of connected parts that work together as a whole.
Sequence The specific order or arrangement of chemical letters (A, T, C, G) in DNA or amino acids in a protein.
Evidence The facts, data, or observations used to support or test a scientific claim.
Nucleotide The basic building block of DNA (A, C, T, G) and RNA (A, C, U, G).
Amino Acid The basic building block used to construct proteins.
Protein A molecule made of amino acids that carries out essential tasks in the cell.
Transcription The process of copying a gene's DNA sequence into an mRNA message.
Translation The process where a cell reads an mRNA message to build a protein.
Somatic Cell Any standard body cell, excluding reproductive cells like sperm or egg.
Genetically Identical Sharing the exact same DNA sequence.
Hemoglobin A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
Central Dogma The principal rule that genetic instructions flow from DNA to RNA to Protein.
Double Helix The twisted-ladder shape of a DNA molecule.
