| Laboratory school | A school connected to a college or university that serves children and prepares future educators. |
| Licensing | Government regulation establishing minimum health, safety, staffing, and program standards. |
| Montessori education | A specific learning approach emphasizing hands-on experience, independence, choice, or program support. |
| Parent cooperative | A program in which families share responsibility for governance, volunteering, or program support. |
| School-age child care | Care and enrichment provided before or after school, during breaks, or in the summer. |
| School readiness | The knowledge, skills, behaviors, and development that help children participate successfully in school. |
| Tuition | Money paid for enrollment in an educational or child care program. |
