Abiotic and Biotic

TermDefinition
Organisms an individual living system—such as a plant, animal, fungus, or microorganism—that functions as an independent unit and interacts directly with its surrounding abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) environment
Populations an individual living system—such as a plant, animal, fungus, or microorganism—that functions as an independent unit and interacts directly with its surrounding abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) environment
Community a group of different species populations living and interacting in the same shared area at the same time
Biotic any living component or anything derived from a living organism that shapes or influences an ecosystem
Abiotic the non-living physical and chemical elements of an ecosystem that shape and influence living organisms and the environment
Biotic Factor A living organism that shapes its environment
Abiotic Factor A non-living physical or chemical element that shapes its environment
Carrying Capacity the maximum number of individuals of a specific species that an ecosystem can support indefinitely without harming or degrading the natural habitat
Limiting Factors any environmental condition or resource that restricts the growth, abundance, or distribution of an organism or a population within an ecosystem
Competition an ecological interaction where organisms or species vie for the same limited resources in an ecosystem
Predator-prey Relationship an ecological interaction where one organism (the predator) kills and consumes another organism (the prey) for energy and nutrients
Parasitism an ecological relationship between two different species where one organism (the parasite) benefits by obtaining nutrients or shelter from another organism (the host), which is harmed in the process.
Disease a medical condition caused, worsened, or triggered by exposure to physical, chemical, biological, or social factors in the external environment
Human Activities any intentional or unintentional actions taken by people that modify, disrupt, or transform natural environmental systems and ecosystems
Water a vital, polar inorganic compound (H₂O) composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom that acts as the fundamental medium, solvent, and life-support driver for Earth's ecosystems
Sunlight the total spectrum of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun and filtered through Earth's atmosphere, serving as the primary energetic driver for virtually all surface-level environmental and ecological processes.
Soil the unconsolidated mineral or organic material on the immediate surface of the Earth that serves as a natural medium for the growth of land plants and functions as a dynamic interface between the Earth's systems
Temperature a measure of the average kinetic energy (motion) of atoms and molecules within a system, representing the degree of hotness or coldness of environmental components like air, water, or soil.
Changing Conditions any shift or alteration in the physical, chemical, or biological components of an ecosystem or the planet over time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
