QuestionAnswer
What is Science? Science-the use of evidence to construct testable explanations and predictions of natural phenomena, as well as the knowledge generated through this process.
What Does Science Only Deal With? Science only deals with the natural world, and does not consider supernatural phenomena.
What Does Science collect and Organize? Science collects and organizes information to look for patterns and connections.
What do Scientist Constantly do with Scientific Explanations? Scientists are constantly testing, debating, and revising scientific explanations.
What do Scientist NOT do? Pretend they have all the answers.
What are all Scientists Explanations Backed up by? They are backed up with evidence.
What is Scientific Theory? It describes a well-tested explanation about the natural world-explains why something happens.
What are Scientific Laws? Concise descriptions of the natural world-typically backed up by math-describes what happens.
What is a Inference? A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
What is a Hypothesis? A tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or experimentation.
What is Scientific Methodology? There is not a Single "Cut and Dry" Scientific Method.
What does Methodology Involve? - Observations and Asking Questions - Forming a Hypothesis - Conducting Controlled Experiments - Collecting and Analyzing Data - Drawing Conclusions
What is a Controlled Experiment? Only one variable changes during the experiment, all others are held constant-the more that is controlled the better the experiment.
What does Held Constant Mean? The more that is controlled the better the experiment.
What is an Independent Variable? To deliberately change or to manipulate.
What is a Dependent Variable? To be observed or measured or to see the response of the experiment.
What does it Mean to Control? The part of the experiment that is not manipulated and is used as a comparison for the independent variable.
What does Positive Control Mean? A part of the experiment that will not change.
What does Negative Control Mean? The part of the experiment that will not change.
What are Constants? Aspects in the experiment that do not change between control and experimental groups.
What are Confounding Variables? Aspects of the experiment that affect the results but are not the independent variable.
What is Quantitative Data? Descriptive and includes characteristics that can't be measured.
When is Quantitative Data Used? Typically used in the hard sciences like Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
What is Qualitative Data? Descriptive and includes characteristics that can't be measured.
When is Qualitative Data Used? Typically used in soft sciences like psychology, sociology, and anthropology.
What can the Analysis of Data do? It can either support or refute the hypothesis.
What is Always Important in Science? To follow evidence wherever it may lead.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
