AELIC Terms

Vocabulary from AELIC

entrenched Firmly established and difficult to change.
confirmation bias The tendency to notice and believe information that supports what you already think.
exacerbate To make a problem or situation worse.
echo chamber An environment where people mainly hear ideas that match their own beliefs.
aggravate To make something worse or more serious.
multi-modal Using more than one way of communicating or learning, such as text, images, audio, or movement.
verbatim Using the exact same words as the original.
grumble To complain in a quiet or unhappy way.
apocalypse A catastrophic event or the end of the world; often used to describe a complete disaster.
cognitive load The amount of mental effort needed to complete a learning task.
receptive skills The language skills of listening and reading, where learners receive information.
productive skills The language skills of speaking and writing, where learners produce language.
affective filter The emotional barrier (such as anxiety or low confidence) that can make language learning harder.
ICQ Questions a teacher asks to make sure students understand instructions before starting a task.
NNEST A teacher of English whose first language is not English.
ALM A teaching method that uses repetition, drills, and pattern practice to build language habits.
MCQ A question with several answer options where only one (or sometimes more) is correct.
feedback Comments or information given to help learners improve their performance.
pedagogy The theory and practice of teaching.
methodology The overall system of teaching methods and techniques used in a course or classroom.
approach A set of beliefs or principles about how languages are learned and should be taught.
inductive A teaching method where learners discover rules from examples.
deductive A teaching method where the teacher explains the rules before learners practice them.
EIL (English as an International Language) The use of English as a global language for communication between people from different language backgrounds.
communicative A teaching style that focuses on using language to communicate meaning in real-life situations.
task-based A teaching approach where learners use language to complete meaningful tasks rather than only study grammar.
CCQ (Concept Checking Question) A question designed to check whether learners have understood the meaning of a new language item.
TTT (Teacher Talk Time) The total time a teacher spends talking during a lesson, which instructors aim to optimize or minimize to increase STT.
STT (Student Talk Time) The amount of time students speak during a lesson.
TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) A framework focusing on having students complete authentic, meaningful tasks using the target language.
PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production) A traditional lesson structure where language is introduced, practiced in a controlled way, and then used freely.
Dogme ELT A materials-light, conversation-driven teaching approach focused on emergent language rather than textbooks.
scaffolding Temporary support provided by the teacher to help learners perform a task beyond their unassisted capability.
emergent language Unplanned language that arises naturally from student interaction during a lesson.
TPR (Total Physical Response) A method that coordinates language with physical movement to reinforce comprehension.
ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) The distance between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance.
interlanguage The evolving linguistic system created by a second language learner on their path to target language proficiency.
CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) An approach where a subject is taught through the medium of a non-native language.
fossilization The process where non-standard language forms become permanently fixed in a learner's interlanguage.
authentic text Real-world reading or listening material created for native speakers, not modified for language learners.
washback (backwash) The direct effect that testing and assessment have on classroom teaching and learning practices.
guided discovery An inductive teaching technique where learners are prompted with questions to notice and deduce language rules themselves.
