booster follow-up vaccination to produce a secondary or tertiary antibody response which is larger and longer lasting than primary response
autoimmune disease immune system fails to identify 'self' material and makes autoantibodies against the body's own tissues
hybridoma hybrid cell produced by the fusion of an antibody-producing lymphocyte with a tumor cell and used to culture continuously a specific monoclonal antibody
autoantibodies antibodies that are produced against a person's own 'self' molecules as a result of an abnormal immune response
endemic a disease that is always present in a specific population or area at a low, relatively constant rate
artificial immunity immunity that occurs through injection of antigen or antibodies into an organism
passive immunity immunity that occurs when antibodies from another organism enter the person's body, as a result no memory cells are created
active immunity immunity that occurs when a person makes their own antibodies, as a result they have memory cells
monoclonal antibody clone of a specific antibody, used to treat cancer by blocking functions of cancer cell or delivering treatments (can be bi-specific or conjugated)
herd immunity indirect protection against an infectious disease created by a high proportion of vaccinated individuals within a population
vaccine dead or attenuated pathogens that are injected to produce active, artificial immunity
epidemic a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease in a particular area or population
natural immunity immunity that occurs through natural exposure to pathogen or antibodies
attenuated living micro-organisms that have been treated so that they still reproduce but no longer cause disease
pandemic a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease across countries or continents (affects many people worldwide)
