Natural Selection

QuestionAnswer
Adaptation A physical trait or behavior that helps a species or individual survive
Evolution The process by which species are changed and can create new species
Natural Selection The most fit (suited) individuals survive and reproduce
Charles Darwin The scientist who first wrote about natural selection
Survival of the fittest Process by which individuals that are better suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully; also called natural selection
Generation One step in the line of descent of a family or species
Genetic trait A characteristic that is passed on from one generation to the next through genetic information
Offspring The product of reproduction
Variation Any difference between individuals of the same species
Mutation A random change in a gene
Genetically modified organism (GMO) An organism produced by transferring genes from a species with a desirable trait and inserting them into another species
Artificial selection Selective breeding or genetic modification of plants and animals to see more traits in an organism that help humans
Selective breeding The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits in hopes of seeing more organisms with that trait
Genetic engineering (modifying) Process of making changes in the DNA code of living organisms
Frequency Number or amount of traits in a population
