Biodiversity The variety of organisms in an area, by species, genes, populations, and communities.
Endangered Species A species that is at serious risk for extinction.
Genetic Diversity Difference in DNA among individuals in a species or population
Habitat Fragmentation The division of a habitat into smaller patches
Ecosystem Diversity The number and variety of ecosystems in a particular area.
Threatened Species A species that is likely to become endangered soon throughout all or part of its range: also called vulnerable species.
Endangered Species Act (ESA) The major law in the United States that protects biodiversity.
Species Survival Plan (SSP) A plan carried out by zoos and aquariums to protect a species
Species Diversity The number or variety of species in the world or particular region.
Captive Breeding The process of breeding and raising organisms under controlled conditions.
Biodiversity Hotspot An area that supports a large number of native species
Poaching The illegal capture or killing of an organism
