| Consumer | an organism that eats other organisms for energy (cannot make their own food) |
| Autotroph | another word for "producer" |
| Heterotroph | another word for "consumer" |
| Herbivore | a consumer that eats plants |
| Omnivore | a consumer that eats plants and animals |
| Carnivore | a consumer that eats meat |
| Decomposer | a heterotroph that consumers dead or decaying organisms and recycles nutrients in the process |
| Limiting factor | a resource in an ecosystem that only has so much to go around; can be living or non-living |
| Biotic | living things (in ecology, refers to a type of resource) |
| Abiotic | non-living things (in ecology, refers to a type of resource) |
| Carrying capacity | maximum number of organisms an ecosystem can hold |
| Ecological succession | when an ecosystems forms over a long time |
| Pioneer species | first species within an ecosystem; includes lichens and mosses |
| Climax community | most biodiverse and stable stage of an ecosystem |
| Secondary succession | if an ecosystem is destroyed, it will naturally resume succession to strive for stability |
