| Gill Filaments | Finger-like projections by which gases enter and leave the blood. |
| Gill Slits | Opening at the rear of the cheek cavity. |
| Counter Current Flow | Water passing across the gills and the blood. |
| Nephron | Tube-like units that regulate the body’s salt and water balance and remove metabolic waste from the blood. |
| Lateral Line | Specialized sensory system that extends along each side of a bony fish’s body. |
| Operculum | Hard plate that covers the gills on each side of the head. |
| Swim Bladder | Special gas sac that allows bony fish to regulate their buoyancy. |
| Teleosts | Most advanced of the ray finned bony fishes. |
| Lung | Internal, bag-like respiratory organ that allows oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between the air and the bloodstream. |
| Pulmonary Vein | Carries oxygen-rich blood from the amphibians lungs to its heart. |
| Septum | Separates the amphibian atrium into right and left halves. |
