osmosis the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
isotonic soulution the concentration of of dissolved substances in the solution is the same as the concentration of dissolbed substances inside the cell.
hypotonic solution the concentration of dissolved substances is lower in the solution outside the cell that the concentration inside the cell.
hypertonic solution the concentration of dissolved substances outside the cell is higher than the concentration inside the cell.
passive transport movement of particles across cell membranes by diffusion or osmosis; the cell uses no energy to move particles across the membranes.
facilitated diffusion the passive transport of materials across the plasma membrane with the aid of transport proteins
active transport movement of materials through a membrane against a concentration gradiant that requires energy from the cell.
endocytosis a process by which a cell surrounds and takes in material from its enviroment.
exocytosis the ecpulsion or secretion of materials from a cell
chromosomes structures which contain DNA
chromatin long strands of DNA wrapped around proteins
cell cycle the sequence of growth and division of a cell
interphase the majority of a cells life is spent in the gowth period.
mitosis the period of nuclear division.
prophase the first and longest phase of mitosis, the long, stringy, chromatin coils up into chromosomes.
