TermDefinition
Breastfeeding Feeding a baby with milk from the mother’s breast.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) A U.S. law that allows workers to take up to 12 weeks off work without pay for family or medical reasons and still keep their job.
Maternity leave Time off from work given to a mother before and after having a baby
Newborn A baby who is 0–28 days old.
Perineum The area of the body between the vagina and anus.
Postpartum The time period after a baby is born, when the mother is recovering.
Postpartum blues Mild emotional changes after birth, like crying, mood swings, or trouble sleeping, that usually go away in a few weeks.
Postpartum depression A more serious and longer-lasting depression after birth that can affect a mother’s ability to care for herself or her baby.
Postpartum psychosis A rare but very serious mental illness after birth that needs immediate medical help.
Support system A group of people who provide help, care, and emotional support
