| Active labor | The stage of labor when the cervix opens from 6–10 cm and contractions become stronger, regular, and closer together. |
| Alternative birth center | A home-like place where women with low-risk pregnancies can give birth with fewer medical interventions. |
| Amniotic sac | A fluid-filled sac in the uterus that protects and surrounds the baby during pregnancy. |
| Analgesia | Medicine that reduces pain but does not remove all feeling or movement. |
| Anesthesia | Medicine that blocks feeling and pain in part or all of the body. |
| Anesthesiologist | A doctor who gives anesthesia and manages pain during medical procedures. |
| Braxton-Hicks contractions | Mild, irregular contractions that happen during pregnancy but do not mean labor has started. |
| Breech birth | When a baby is positioned feet or bottom first instead of head first before birth. |
| Certified nurse midwife | A trained healthcare provider who helps with pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and newborn care. |
| Cesarean section | A surgical birth where the baby is delivered through a cut in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. |
| Dilate | When the cervix opens wider to allow the baby to pass through during birth. |
| Doulas | Trained companions who provide emotional and physical support to a mother during childbirth. |
| Epidural | A pain-relief injection given in the lower back during labor that numbs part of the body. |
| Episiotomy | A surgical cut made at the vaginal opening to help the baby pass through during birth. |
| Home delivery | Giving birth at home instead of a hospital or birth center. |
| Labor and delivery nurse | A nurse who helps care for mothers during labor, birth, and recovery. |
| Natural childbirth | Giving birth without routine medical pain medications or interventions. |
| Obstetrician-gynecologist | A doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth, and women’s reproductive health |
| Premature labor | Labor that starts before 37 weeks of pregnancy. |
| Standard hospital delivery | Giving birth in a hospital with medical staff, equipment, and pain relief options available. |
| Transition | The final and most intense stage of active labor before the baby is born. |
| Transverse | When the baby is lying sideways across the uterus instead of head up or down. |
