| Variation | any difference in traits between individual organisms |
| Function | how something works |
| Protein molecules | a type of large molecule that perfoms important functions inside organisms |
| Structure | the way something is shaped or constructed |
| Gene | an instruction for making a protein molecule |
| Gene Version | a specific form of gene that provides instruction for making a particular protein molecule |
| Mutation | a random change to a gene trait that sometimes results in a new trait |
| Heterozygous | having gene versions that are different |
| Homozygous | having gene versions that are the same |
| Inherit | to receive genes from parents |
| Sexual Reproduction | the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create offspring |
| Asexual Reproduction | the process in which only one parent passes on its genetic information to create offspring; CLONING |
| Recessive | the trait is inherited only if the offspring inherits two copies of the allele for that trait |
| Dominant | this trait is inherited as long as the offspring receives at least one copy of the allele for that trait |
| Chromosome | a long piece of DNA that contains many genes |
| DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) | genetic information that is located in the nucleus and is passed from parent to offspring |
