Nervous system

QuestionAnswer
neuron Cells that carry electrical impulses.
cerebellum Regulates balance and coordination.
cerebrum Part of the brain (4 lobes) that controls voluntary movement.
occipital lobe Lobe of brain to control vision.
brain stem Connects brain and spinal cord. 2 parts pons and medulla oblongata.
axon carries impulse away from cell body.
myelin Insulates the axon. Secreted by schwann cells.
resting potential Neuron - in and + out.
action potential Reversal of charges in neuron due to movement of ions. ( + in and - out)
cerebral cortex Gray matter of cerebrum consisting of cell bodies. (outer)
white matter Inner layer of cerebrum, consists of axons and myelin sheaths.
thalamus Serves as connection between sensory receptors and the brain.
hypothalamus Controls homeostasis...
photoreceptors Sensitive to light (rods and cones)
mechanoreceptors receptors to sense pressure changes.
gray matter outer layer of cerebrum, called cerebral cortex.
cornea light travels through this first
retina inner tissue of eye, made up of photoreceptors
choroid middle layer of eye tissue, blood vessles found here.
schlera outer layer of eye tissue; provides shape to eye.
aqueous humor liquid layer of eye behind the cornea.
iris colored portion of eye, adjusts the size of the pupil.
pupil light travel through this to the back of the eye, iris regulates this.
vitreous humor gel like liquid area of eye, gives eye its shape.
optic nerve carries nerve impulses from the eye to the braim.
motor neurons carries impulses to muscles and organs.
sensory neurons carries impulse from the sense organs to the brain.
stimulant drug that causes increase heart rate, blood pressure...
depressant drug that lowers blood pressure, heart rate.
rods and cones Two types of photoreceptors.
axon Long part of neuron that carries the impulse.
myelin sheath Insulates the neuron.
schwann cells secretes the myelin around the axon.
interneurons connect the sensory and motor neurons.
central nervous system made of the brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system consists of all nerves and other connections.
neurotransmitter chemical messangers that allow imulses to pass from neuron to neuron.
brain stem consists of the medulla oblongata and the pons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
