Aegisthus Became Clytemnestra’s lover during Agamemnon’s absence during the Trojan War and killed Agamemnon upon his return. He was then killed by Agamemnon’s son, Orestes.
Aeolous - Keeper of the winds. He places all of the bad winds in a bag and gives them to Odysseus. Ithaca is within sight when the ship's crew lets the winds out and the ship is blown far away by the storms within the bag.
Agamemnon The leader of the Greek forces against Troy. He was killed by his wife’s lover,
Alcinous King of the Phaeacians who gave assistance to Odysseus when Odysseus was shipwrecked on his island.
Antinous The evil leader of the suitors. He is the first one Odysseus kill
Arete Wife of Alcinous; queen of Phaeacia. Odysseus grasps her knees and offers gesture of supplication
Argos dog in the epic, there to represent the "current" state of ithaca once O came back
Athena Goddess of wisdom. She comes to Odysseus' aid by intervening with the other gods to bring Poseidon into line and let Odysseus go home.
Calypso A beautiful sea nymph who tries to make Odysseus her husband. She holds him captive for seven years. Calypso offers Odysseus immortality if he will stay with her.
Charybdis - A violent whirlpool. It destroys all ships that get caught in home by boat, having this god angry at you is not a good idea
Cylopes One-eyed giants living on the shores of Sicily.
circe When Odysseus’ crew meets her, she turns them; into pigs. Odysseus becomes her lover, and she later helps him on his journey home.
Clytemnestra killed her husband, Agamemnon to avenge his sacrifice of their daughter, Iphigenia, to secure fair winds for the Greek fleet sailing to Troy.
Demodocus the blind bard in Pheaeacia
Elpenor the drunk guy that was a part of O's crew who jumped off a balcony which led to his fate
Eurymachus A suitor. He is an evil coward. He tries to blame Antinous for all the suitors actions. Eurymachus is the second suitor killed by Odysseus.
Eurycleia An old woman servant who was a devoted nurse to both Odysseus and Telemachus.
Eurylochus Crew member who decides to eat helio's(god of sun's) cattle when O specifically told them NOT to
Ino A minor sea goddess; gave Odysseus a magic scarf when he was shipwrecked.
Kalliope One of the nine muses; the muse of eloquence and heroic poetry.
Laestrygonians a tribe of, gigantic, cannibalistic barbarians featured in Book 10 of Homer's Odyssey, ruled by King Antiphates
Laertes Odysseus' father. He lives on a farm some distance from Odysseus palace.
Lotus Eaters - A people who eat the Lotus plant, a narcotic.
Menelaus - King of Sparta. He was a comrade of Odysseus during the Trojan war. It was the abduction of his wife, Helen, that caused the war.
Mentes long-time friend of Odysseus. In Book 1, the goddess Athena disguises herself as Mentes to visit Ithaca. so
Mentor faithful friend of Odysseus who fought with him at Troy. Athena sometimes appears as Mentor in The Odyssey.
Nausicaa a- Daughter of King Alcinous of the Phaeacians. Found and aided by Odysseus after he was shipwrecked on the Phaeacian coast after leaving Calypso.
Nestor King of Pylos. He fought at Troy with Odysseus. He is known for his wise counsel.
Orestes Agamemnon’s son. Avenged Agamemnon’s murder by killing his mother and her lover,
Peisistratus appearing as the youngest son of King Nestor of Pylos and a close companion to Telemachus.
Penelope The faithful, loyal wife of Odysseus. She patiently waits 20 years for his return. She is Homer’s example of the perfect Greek wife and mother.
Polyphemus Posidons son; cyclops O encounters and blinds
Scylla - A six headed monster that Odysseus must go by to get home. She eats six of his men (one for each head).
Sirens creatures with mesmerizing voices who lure sailors to death on rocky shores
Telemachus Son of Odysseus and Penelope. He was only an infant when his father left to fight in Troy. The Odyssey is also a story about Telemachus’ journey to manhood.
Tiresias A famous, deceased Greek prophet. Odysseus goes to Hades to consult his spirit.
