| Folate | a B vitamin (found in dark leafy greens, oranges, nuts, beans, and peas) that the body needs to make DNA and other genetic material, and to help cells divide |
| Folic acid | a synthetic form of folate that is added to fortify foods |
| Gestational diabetes | a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who do not already have diabetes, when your body cannot make enough insulin during pregnancy |
| High blood pressure | When blood pressure is too high, which can cause problems in pregnancy |
| Insulin | A hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into cells for energy |
| Listeriosis | A serious infection from contaminated food that can harm unborn babies |
| Miscarriage | The loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks |
| Placenta previa | When the placenta covers part or all of the cervix during pregnancy |
| Preeclampsia | A serious pregnancy condition with high blood pressure and organ stress |
| Preterm labor | Labor that starts too early, before 37 weeks |
| Soft cheese | Cheese with high moisture; unpasteurized types can be unsafe in pregnancy |
| Stillbirth / stillborn | When a baby dies after 20 weeks of pregnancy or during birth |
| Unpasteurized | Food that has not been heated to kill harmful germs |
