TermDefinition
Folate a B vitamin (found in dark leafy greens, oranges, nuts, beans, and peas) that the body needs to make DNA and other genetic material, and to help cells divide
Folic acid a synthetic form of folate that is added to fortify foods
Gestational diabetes a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who do not already have diabetes, when your body cannot make enough insulin during pregnancy
High blood pressure When blood pressure is too high, which can cause problems in pregnancy
Insulin A hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into cells for energy
Listeriosis A serious infection from contaminated food that can harm unborn babies
Miscarriage The loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks
Placenta previa When the placenta covers part or all of the cervix during pregnancy
Preeclampsia A serious pregnancy condition with high blood pressure and organ stress
Preterm labor Labor that starts too early, before 37 weeks
Soft cheese Cheese with high moisture; unpasteurized types can be unsafe in pregnancy
Stillbirth / stillborn When a baby dies after 20 weeks of pregnancy or during birth
Unpasteurized Food that has not been heated to kill harmful germs
