Ecology The Study of the interactions between organisms and the living and nonliving components of their environments
Interdependence the quality of all organisms interacting with other organisms and the nonliving portion of their environment for survival
Ecological Model a physical, conceptual, or mathematical representation used to describe the components of an ecological system
Biosphere the thin volume of Earth and its atmosphere that supports life
Ecosystem all of the organisms and the nonliving environment found in a particular place
Community all the interacting organisms living in an area
Population all the members of a species that live in one place at one time
Habitat the place where an organism lives
Biotic Factor the living components of the environment
Abiotic Factor the nonliving physical and chemical characteristics of the environment
Tolerance Curve a graph of performance versus values of an environmental variable
Acclimation the process by which an organism adjusts its tolerance to abiotic factors
Conformer an organism that does not regulate its internal conditions; changes as the external environment changes
Regulator an organism that uses energy to control some of its internal conditions
Dormancy a state of reduced activity during periods of unfavorable conditions
Migration moving to a more favorable habitat
Niche the specific role, or way of life, of a species within its environment
Generalist a species with a broad niche that can tolerate a range of conditions and use a variety of resources
Specialist a species with a narrow niche
