| Adoption | the action or fact of legally taking another’s child and bringing it up as one’s own, or the fact of being adopted |
| Amniotic fluid | the fluid surrounding a fetus within the amniotic sac |
| Amniotic sac | the fluid-filled sac that contains and protects a fetus in the womb |
| Artificial insemination | the medical procedure of injecting semen into the vagina or uterus |
| Cervix | the lower, narrow end of the uterus that forms a canal between the uterus and vagina |
| Conception | the joining of a sperm and egg, also known as fertilization |
| Fallopian tubes | a pair of tubes through which female eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus |
| Fetus | a developing human from usually two months after conception to birth |
| Full-term pregnancy | when a baby is born between 39 weeks, 0 days and 40 weeks, 6 days |
| Genetic counseling | process of reviewing blood work to look at the genetics of individuals and families affected by , at risk of genetic disorders to help them understand and adapt to the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease |
| Gestation | The time a baby grows in the womb, from conception to birth |
| Glucose | A type of sugar in the blood that gives the body energy |
| Glucose screening | A test that checks a pregnant woman’s blood sugar levels |
| Group B strep | A bacteria that is usually harmless in adults but can be dangerous to newborns |
| HCG hormone | A hormone that shows pregnancy and helps support the baby’s growth |
| In vitro fertilization (IVF) | When an egg and sperm are joined outside the body to help cause pregnancy |
| Infertility | Not being able to become pregnant after trying for a long time |
| Lanugo | Soft, fine hair that covers a baby before birth |
| Maternal-fetal care doctor | A doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies |
| Menstruation | Monthly bleeding when pregnancy does not happen |
| Morning sickness | Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy |
| Ovary | Female organ that produces eggs |
| Ovulation | When an ovary releases an egg |
| Ovum | A female egg cell |
| Placenta | The organ that gives oxygen and nutrients to the baby and removes waste |
| Prenatal cell free DNA (cfDNA) | A blood test during pregnancy that checks for certain genetic conditions |
| Screening prenatal test | A test that checks the chance of birth defects |
| Surrogacy | When a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple |
| Trimester | One of three stages of pregnancy, each about three months long |
| Ultrasound | A test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the baby |
| Umbilical cord | A cord that connects the baby to the placenta |
| Uterus | The organ where a baby grows during pregnancy |
| Vernix caseosa | A creamy white coating that protects a baby’s skin before birth |
| Viability | The ability of a baby to survive outside the womb |
