Adoption Legally taking another person's child and raising them as your own.
Amniotic Fluid The liquid that surrounds and protects the baby in the womb.
Amniotic Sac The fluid-filling bag that holds and protects the baby in the womb.
Artificial Insemination A medical method of placing sperm into a woman's body to help her get pregnant.
Cervix The lower opening of the uterus that connects to the vagina.
Conception when a sperm egg join together to begin a pregnancy.
Fallopian Tubes Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
Fetus A developing baby from 8 weeks after conception until birth.
Full-term Pregnancy When a baby Is born between 39 weeks and 41 weeks of pregnancy.
Genetic counseling Medical support to help families understand genetic conditions and risks.
Gestation The time a baby grows in the womb, from conception to birth.
Glucose A type of sugar in the blood that gives the body energy.
Glucose Screening A test that checks a pregnant woman's blood sugar levels.
Group B Strep A bacteria that is usually harmless in adults can be dangerous to newborns.
HCG Hormone A hormone that shows pregnancy and helps support the baby's growth.
In Vito fertilization When an egg and sperm are joined outside the body to help cause pregnancy.
Infertility Not being able to become pregnant after trying for a long time.
Lanugo Soft, fine hair that covers a baby before birth,
Maternal-fetal Care Doctor A doctor specializes in high-risk pregnancies.
Menstruation Monthly bleeding with pregnancy does not happen.
Morning Sickness Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
Ovary Female organ that produces eggs.
Ovulation When an ovary releases an egg.
Ovum A female egg cell.
Placenta The organ that gives oxygen and nutrients to the baby and removes waste.
Prenatal Cell Free DNA A blood test during pregnancy that checks for certain genetic conditions.
Prenatal Development How a baby grows inside the womb before birth.
Screening prenatal test A test that checks the chance of birth defects.
Surrogacy When a woman carries and gives birth to a baby another person or couple.
Trimester One of three stages of pregnancy, each about three months long.
Ultrasound A test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the baby.
Umbilical Cord A cord that connects the baby to the placenta.
Uterus The organ where a baby grows during pregnancy.
Vernix Caseosa A creamy white coating that protects the baby's skin before birth.
Viability The ability of a baby to survive outside the womb
