Hum. BIO Cell

Definations of Organelles and Other Cell parts

QuestionAnswer
Cells The basic unit of life
Plasma Membrane Keeps the cell's complex chemistry discrete from the contamination of the nonliving world
Organelle The general name given to cellular structures made of complex macromolecules
Membrane Organelles Cellular structures wrapped in a phospholipid bi-layers
Non-Membrane Organelles Cellular structures typically made of complex proteins
Nucleus Spherical membrane cell that houses DNA and RNA
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Is often a industrial complex for protein production
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum A site where some of the proteins produced in the Rough ER do their jobs and where detoxification, materials processing and lipid syntheses occurs.
Golgi Apparatus Site for packaging and special processing of molecules (mainly proteins) for export out of the cell
Mitochondria Powerhouse - energy transducers
Vacuole Typically a large bubble of membrane used for storage inside a cell.
Vesicle Small membrane spheres with various storage or transport functions
Lysosome Vesicle or small vacuole containing digestive enzymes 1 of 2
Peroxisome Vesicle or small vacuole containing digestive enzymes 2 of 2
Cytoskeleton Network of protein like fibers and tubules that support and moves the cell
Flagella Whip-like projections composed of contractile proteins, one, long
Cilia Whip-like projections composed of contractile proteins, found in respiratory track
Ribosomes Mixture of RNA and proteins, work site for protein synthesis
Centrioles Responsible for directing many aspects of cell division
Microvilli Folds in plasma membranes to increase surface area
Cytosol The fluid component of cytoplasm, excluding organelles and the insoluble, usually suspended, cytoplasmic components

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
