The Digestive System

Digestion The breakdown of food (both mechanically and chemically )
Why is digestion necessary? To release energy from food
Mechanical digestion the physical breakdown of food, occurs in the mouth (chewing ) and the stomach (churning)
Chemical digestion the breakdown of food using enzymes, occurs in the mouth (saliva amylase), occurs in the stomach (hydrochloric acid)
The digestive system consists of a tube running from the mouth to the anus called the alimentary canal
Alimentary canal aka Gastrointestinal tract
Gland Produces and secretes (releases) a substance eg, salivary glands produce and release saliva.
Organ A group of tissues working together to perform a particular function.
Incisors Located at the front of the mouth, chisel shaped, cut and slice food
Canines Longer pointed, fang like teeth, grip and tear food
Premolars Larger with flat surfaces, crush grind and chew food
Molars Large teeth at the back of the mouth also chew, crush and grind food
