| Digestion | The breakdown of food (both mechanically and chemically ) |
| Why is digestion necessary? | To release energy from food |
| Mechanical digestion | the physical breakdown of food, occurs in the mouth (chewing ) and the stomach (churning) |
| Chemical digestion | the breakdown of food using enzymes, occurs in the mouth (saliva amylase), occurs in the stomach (hydrochloric acid) |
| The digestive system consists of a tube running from the mouth to the anus called the | alimentary canal |
| Alimentary canal aka | Gastrointestinal tract |
| Gland | Produces and secretes (releases) a substance eg, salivary glands produce and release saliva. |
| Organ | A group of tissues working together to perform a particular function. |
| Incisors | Located at the front of the mouth, chisel shaped, cut and slice food |
| Canines | Longer pointed, fang like teeth, grip and tear food |
| Premolars | Larger with flat surfaces, crush grind and chew food |
| Molars | Large teeth at the back of the mouth also chew, crush and grind food |
