ACEs Adverse Childhood Experiences Extraordinary stress, episodic or continual, that has negative impact on students' health/well-being, including capacity to learn
ADA Americans with Disabilities Act Civil Rights law passed in 1990 that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination and requires building and transportation accessibility and reasonable accommodations in workplace
ADHD Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Medical condition in which students have significant ability to attend, excessive motor activity, and/or impulsivity
AUT/ASD Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder Condition in which an individual lacks social responsiveness from a very early age, has high need for structure and routines, and demonstrates significant language impairments. These characteristics interfere with learning.
BIP Behavior Intervention Plan Detailed strategy, developed on basis of functional behavior assessment, to address significant behavior problems experienced by student with disability. Plan includes detailed interventions, people responsible, timeline, and data. Required by federal law
CBM Curriculum Based Measurement Particular kind of curriculum-based assessment characterized by a research base establishing its technical adequacy as well as standardized measurement tasks that are fluency based.
DD Developmental Delay Measured by appropriate diagnostic instruments/procedures in one or more of following areas: Cognitive, physical, communication, social/emotional, adaptive, skills, or diagnosed physical/mental condition with high probability resulting in delay
DHH Deaf or Hard of Hearing Condition in which an individual has inability or limited ability to receive info auditorily such that it interferes with learning.
ED Emotional Disturbance Condition in which individual has significant difficulty in social-emotional domain, so much so that it interferes with learning
FAPE Free Appropriate Public Education Students with disabilities entitled to attend public schools, receiving educational services designed specifically to address unique needs, possibly including specialized materials, settings, and tech. no cost to parents
FBA Functional Behavior Assessment Gathering detailed data on student's behavior/context in which occurs for purpose of determining reasons for and creating behavior intervention plan. Process required by federal law when student w/ disability has significant behavior problems
ID Intellectual Disability Significant limitations in intellectual ability (IQ 70 or below) and adaptive behaviors.
IDEA Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Federal Education Law updated in 1975 Education for All Handicapped Children Act and ensures students with disabilities receive special education/related services through prescribed policies/procedures.
IEP Individual Education Plan Doc prepared by multidisciplinary team/annual review team that specifies student's level of functioning/needs, instructional goals/objectives for students and how they will be evaluated, the nature/extent of special ed/related services received.
