Ecology 7C
Study Stack for Ecology Test
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Symbiosis | A LONG TERM relationship between two organisms |
| Competition | When two organisms compete for the same resource: food, water, shelter, mates, etc. |
| Predation | When one organism (predator) hunts and kills the other (prey) |
| Ecology | The study of the relationships of living things and their environment |
| Abiotic | Non living things in an ecosystem |
| Organism | Single member of one species Ex:one fish |
| Population | One group of organisms all the same species Ex:a school of fish |
| Community | All the BIOTIC things in an ecosystem Ex:school of fish, seahorse, dolphin, etc. |
| Ecosystem | All the biotic and abiotic things in a community Ex:a coral reef |
| Biosphere | All the places on earth where life exists Ex:the ocean |
| Producer | Organisms that produce their own food, autotrophs |
| Consumer | Organisms that can NOT make their own food |
| Carnivore | Consumer that eat only MEAT, carnivores hunt and kill |
| Herbivore | Consumer that eat only PLANTS |
| Omnivore | Consumer that eat both plants and meat |
| Scavenger | Consumer that eat dead animals that were NOT killed by itself |
| Decomposer | Organisms that get their energy by consuming dead orgaisms, nature's recyclers |
| Niche | An organisms unique role in an ecosystem |
| Habitat | Place where an organism lives |
| Food WEB | Interconnected food chains |
| Food CHAIN | Shows how energy moves through one organism into the next |
| How much energy goes through each organism throughout the chain? | 10%, hence more low level organisms needed for the ones on top |
| What do livings things all have? | Cells, respond to change, reproduce, DNA, use energy, and grow and develop |
| Keystone Species | Organism that has a more important role in ecosystem |
| Primary Producers | Plants |
| Primary Consumers | Consume primary producers only |
| Secondary Consumers | Consume primary consumers, omnivores |
| Tertiary Consumers | Feed on secondary and primary consumers, carnivores |
| Biotic | The living things in an ecosystem |
