Symbiosis A LONG TERM relationship between two organisms
Competition When two organisms compete for the same resource: food, water, shelter, mates, etc.
Predation When one organism (predator) hunts and kills the other (prey)
Ecology The study of the relationships of living things and their environment
Abiotic Non living things in an ecosystem
Organism Single member of one species Ex:one fish
Population One group of organisms all the same species Ex:a school of fish
Community All the BIOTIC things in an ecosystem Ex:school of fish, seahorse, dolphin, etc.
Ecosystem All the biotic and abiotic things in a community Ex:a coral reef
Biosphere All the places on earth where life exists Ex:the ocean
Producer Organisms that produce their own food, autotrophs
Consumer Organisms that can NOT make their own food
Carnivore Consumer that eat only MEAT, carnivores hunt and kill
Herbivore Consumer that eat only PLANTS
Omnivore Consumer that eat both plants and meat
Scavenger Consumer that eat dead animals that were NOT killed by itself
Decomposer Organisms that get their energy by consuming dead orgaisms, nature's recyclers
Niche An organisms unique role in an ecosystem
Habitat Place where an organism lives
Food WEB Interconnected food chains
Food CHAIN Shows how energy moves through one organism into the next
How much energy goes through each organism throughout the chain? 10%, hence more low level organisms needed for the ones on top
What do livings things all have? Cells, respond to change, reproduce, DNA, use energy, and grow and develop
Keystone Species Organism that has a more important role in ecosystem
Primary Producers Plants
Primary Consumers Consume primary producers only
Secondary Consumers Consume primary consumers, omnivores
Tertiary Consumers Feed on secondary and primary consumers, carnivores
Biotic The living things in an ecosystem
