Cells lesson 4
Allie’s cells lesson 4 science notecards
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Selectively permeable | A property of cell membranes that allows some substances to pass through, while others cannot. |
| Passive transport | The movement of materials through a cell membrane without using energy |
| Diffusion | The process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane. |
| Active transport | The movement of materials through a cell membrane using cellular energy. |
| Endocytosis | Endocytosis is the process where a cell takes in materials |
| Exocytosis | Exocytosis is a process for moving large molecules out of the cell to the cell exterior. |
| Explain how materials move in and out of cells | By either passive or active transport. Endocytosis brings things into the cell by pinching off a piece of the plasma membrane to form a vesicle, while exocytosis pushes things out of the cell. |
| Know the different types of membrane transport and how each works | Passive and active transport are two processes by which materials pass through the cell membrane. Active transport requires the cell to use its own energy, while passive transport does not |
| Explain the difference between endocytosis and exocytosis | Endocytosis brings things into the cell by pinching off a piece of the plasma membrane to form a vesicle, while exocytosis pushes things out of the cell. |
| Explain the difference between facilitated diffusion and diffusion | Facilitated diffusion needs help but diffusion does not. |
