| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell wall | A rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms. |
| Cell membrane | A cell structure that controls which substances can enter or leave the cell. |
| Nucleus | In cells, a large oval organelle that contains the cell's genetic material and the form of DNA and controls many of the cell's activities. |
| Organelle | The small structures inside of a cell that perform the cell's functions. |
| Ribosome | A small grain shaped organelle in the cytoplasm of a cell that produces proteins. |
| Cytoplasm | The thick fluid region of a cell located inside the cell membrane (in prokaryotes) or between the cell membrane and nucleus (in eukaryotes). |
| Mitochondria | Rod–shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | A cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another. |
| Golgi Apparatus | A structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell. |
| Vacuole | A sack like oregano that stores water, food, and other materials. |
| Lysosome | A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. |
| Multicellular | Consisting of many cells. |
| Unicellular | Consisting of 1 cell. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. |
| Organ | A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together. |
| Organ System | A group of organs that work together to perform a major function. |
| Specialized Cells | In many–celled organisms, cells are often organized into tissues, organs, and organ systems. |
| Division of Labor | Division of labor means that everything does its part, such as, the parts of a cell. |
| List what is inside of a nucleus. | Nucleolus, chromatin(DNA) |
| Describe the difference between animal and plant cell structures. | Plant cells have bigger vacuoles, chloroplast, and cell walls, while animal cells don’t have any of these.. |
| Describe what the Endoplasmic reticulum does for ribosomes. | Endoplasmic reticulum carries the proteins that the ribosomes make. |
| Where are ribosomes made and why are they important? | Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus and they’re important because they produce proteins. |
