Green Cells Book
Chapter 1 Lesson 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Specialized cells. | A group of cells that perform a specific function |
| Vacuole | A sac-like organelle that stores water, food, and other materials. |
| Organelle | A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within a cell. |
| Mitochondrion | Rod-shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use for food to carry out the function. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | A cell structure that forms a maze of passageway in which proteins and other materials are carried from one place to another not her part of the cell. |
| Lysosomes | A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. |
| Golgi apparatus | A structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell. |
| Cell membrane | A cell structure that controls which substances can enter and leave the cell. |
| Nucleus | In cells, a large oval organelle that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA and controls many of the cells activities. The central core of an atom that contains protons and neutrons. |
| Ribosome | A small grain-shaped organelle in the cytoplasm of a cell that produces proteins. |
| Cytoplasm | A thick fluid region of a cell located inside the cell membrane or between the cell membrane and nucleus. |
| Lysosome | A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones. |
| Multicellular | Consisting of many cells. |
| Unicellular | Made of a single cell. |
| Organ | A body structure that is composed of different kinds of tissues that work together. |
| Organ system | Groups of organs. |
| What is inside the nucleus? | The nucleolus, and the nuclear envelope. |
| Difference between plant cell and animal cell? | Plant cells have a chloroplast and a cell wall, but a animal cell does not have a chloroplast and has a cell membrane instead of a cell wall. |
| What does the endoplasmic reticulum do for the ribosomes? | The ER carries the ribosomes to their parts of the cell. |
| Where are ribosomes made and why are they important. | Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus and they function as factories. |
