TermDefinition
Food chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food web A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Abiotic factor A nonliving part of an organism's habitat.
Biotic factor Any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact
symbiosis A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species.
Predator An animal that hunts other animals for food
Prey An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
Producer An organism that can make its own food
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Tertiary consumer An organism that eats secondary consumers
Food chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food web A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
decomposers Organisms that break down the dead remains of other organisms
detritivores feed on plant and animal remains and other dead matter
Carnivore A consumer that eats only animals.
Herbivore A consumer that eats only plants.
Linnean classification Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Scientific name the two-part, scientifically recognized name given to an organism, consisting of its genus and species
MRS GREN Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition
Dichotomous key a key for the identification of organisms based on a series of choices between alternative characteristics
trophic level Each step in a food chain or food web
Class (Classification) a group of closely related orders
Kingdom (Classification) a group of closely related phylums
Phylum (Classification) a group of closely related classes
Order (Classification) a group of closely related families
Family (Classification) A group of closely related genus
Species (Classification) A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
