| biosphere | the part of Earth where life exists |
| community | All the different populations that live together in an area |
| population | group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area |
| competition | Interaction among organisms that vie for the same resource in an ecosystem |
| limiting factor | a factor that controls the growth of a population |
| population density | a factor that controls the growth of a population |
| carrying capacity | Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support |
| biotic potential | the potential growth of a population if it could grow in perfect conditions with no limiting factors |
| species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| birthrate | the ratio of live births in an area to the population of that area |
| death rate | The number of individuals that die over time in a given time period |
| extinct | no longer existing or living |
| endangered | a species whose population is at risk of extinction |
| threatened | A species that could become endangered in the near future |
| migration | seasonal movement of animals to more favorable habitats |
| niche | organism's role, or job, in its habitat |
| habitat | the place where an organism lives |
| symbiosis | A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. |
| mutualism | A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. |
| commensalism | A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected |
| parasitism | A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed |
| predator | An animal that hunts other animals for food |
| prey | Animal hunted or caught for food |
| photosynthesis | Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars |
| ecology | The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment |
| consumer | An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| producer | An organism that can make its own food. |
| stomata | the place where photosynthesis and transpiration take place in the plant |
