Chapter 3 Plants
Lesson 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chlorophyll | A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which plants and some other organisms capture the energy in sunlight and use it to make food |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a specific function |
| Chloroplast | An organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and changes it to an energy form that cells can use in making food |
| Vacuole | A sac-like organelle that stores, water, food, and other materials |
| Cuticle | The waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants |
| Vascular tissue | The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tubelike structures that carry water, food, and minerals |
| Organelle | A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| Chromatin | Strands floating directly ahead in the nucleus, containing genetic material, the instructions for directing the cells functions. |
| Mitochondrion | Rod-shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | A membrane network within the cytoplasm of cells involved in the synthesis, modification, and transport of cellular materials. |
| Lysosomes | a saclike cellular organelle that contains various hydrolytic enzymes |
| Golgi body | a cytoplasmic organelle that consists of a stack of several to many smooth, membranous saccules and associated vesicles active in the modification and transport of proteins |
| three main character characteristics that all plants share | they are autotrophs, have cell walls, and use the sun's energy as food in a process called photosynthesis |
| Two things that a plant needs in those two things it makes during photosynthesis | carbon dioxide and water |
| What are two reasons why cell walls are important for plants | they surround the cell membrane and separates the cell from the environment, contain cellulose, which makes the walls rigid |
| List the five things that a plant needs to survive on land | have ways to obtain water, other nutrients from their surroundings, retain water, support their bodies, transport materials, and reproduce |
| Label a plant cell diagram and why it’s different from an animal cell | Chloroplast, Vacuole, ribosomes, cytoplasm, nucleus, Golgi body, mitochondria, cell membrane, cell wall, endoplasmic reticulum. It is different from an animal cell because animal is shaped like a circle. |
