Chapter 3 plants

Lesson 1

TermDefinition
Describe the 3 main characteristics that all plants share? Autotrophs, multicellular, all plant cells have a cell wall.
List the 2 things that a plant needs and the 2 things it makes during photosynthesis. Sporophyte stage and gametophyte. Water and nutrients for their environment.
Chlorophyll Is a green pigment found in the chloroplast of plants, algae, and some bacteria
Photosynthesis Sunlight provides the energy for this food-making process
Tissue a group of similar cells that perform a special function in an organism
Chloroplast They look like green jelly beans and they are the structure of how food is made
Vacuole A large storage sac that can expand and shrink. It stores many substances, including water, wastes and food. A plant wilts when too much water has left its vacuole.
Cuticle Helps a plant reduce water loss! It’s waxy and it waterproof.
Vascular tissue system of tube like structures inside the plant through which water materials in Food move.
Organelle A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell
Mitochondrion Rod shaped cells structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions
Endoplasmic reticulum A cell structure that forms, a maze of passageway’s in which proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
Chromatin Thin strands floating directly ahead in the nucleus tell the nucleus how to direct the cell
Lysosomes A, small round cell structure contains chemicals that breakdown large food particles into smaller ones
Golgi body A structure in the cell that receives proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum package them, and distributes them to other part of the cell
What are two reasons why cell wall are important for plants? The cell wall surrounds the membrane and separates the cell from the environment
List the five things that a plant needs to survive on land For plants to survive on land it must have ways to obtain water and other nutrients from their surroundings, retain water support their bodies to transfer materials and reproduce.
How is a plant cell different from an animal cell? A plant cell has a cell wall but an animal cell doesn’t.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
