Chapter 3 plants

lesson 1

TermDefinition
Chlorophyll A green photosynthetic pigment found in the chloroplast of plants, algae, and some bacteria.
Photosynthesis The process by which plants and other autotrophs capture and use light energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water.
Tissue A group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Chloroplast An organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that capture energy from sunlight and changes it to an energy from that cell can use in making food.
Vacuole a sac-like Organelle that stores water, food, and other materials.
Cuticle The waxy, waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of moist plants.
Vascular tissue The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tubelike structures that carry water, food, and minerals.
Organelle A tiny cell structures that carries out specific functions within the cell.
Chromatin Chromatin is a complex of DNA and proteins in the nucleus that packages genetic material and regulates gene expression.
Mitochondrion Rod shaped cell structures that convert energy in molecules to energy the cells can use to carry out its functions.
Endoplasmic reticulum A cell structure that forms, a maze of passage ways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of this cell to another.
Lysosomes Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles that serve as the digestive system of the cell, breaking down waste materials.
Golgi body they are key cellular organelle responsible for processing, packaging, and transporting proteins and lipids within cells.
Describe the 3 main characteristics that all plants share. Multicellular, autotroph, cell walls
List the 2 That a plant needs and the 2 things it makes during photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide and water. Oxygen and Glucose.
What are 2 reasons why cell walls are important for a plant. provides structural support and protection.
List the 5 things that a plant needs to survive on the land. Light, water, air, nutrients, and space.
Label a plant cell diagram and why it's different from an animal cell. plants cells have chloroplast, cell wall, and a larger vacuole Cell Wall Cell Membrane Nucleus Nucleolus Cytoplasm Chloroplasts Mitochondria Ribosomes Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Apparatus Vacuole Plasmodesmata

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
