Chapter 3 plants
Lesson 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chlorophyll | Is a green photosynthetic pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants ,algae and some bacteria. |
| Photosynthesis | Is the process by which plants and other autotrophs capture and use light energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water. |
| Tissue | Is a group of similar cells that perform a specific function. |
| Chloroplast | Is an organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and changes it into an energy form that cells can use in making food. |
| Vacuole | Is a sac -like organelle that stores, water, food ,and other materials. |
| Cuticle | Is the waxy waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants. |
| Vascular tissue | Is the internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made of tubelike structures that carry water, food and minerals. |
| Organelle | Is a tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| Chromatin | is the complex of DNA and proteins that make up the chromosomes in eukaryotic cells. |
| Mitochondrion | Rod shaped cell structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy that the cell can use to carry out its functions. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | is a cell structure that forms a maze of passage ways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another. |
| Lysosomes | Is a small rounded cell structure containing chemicals to break down large food particles into smaller ones. |
| Golgi body | is a structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly form materials from the endoplastic reticulum ,packages them and, distribute some of the other parts of the cell. |
| Describe the 3 main characteristics that all plant share. | They are autotrophs, cell walls, many cells. |
| List the two things that a plant needs, and the two things it makes during photosynthesis. | Water, other nutrients. Food and oxygen. |
| What are two reasons why cell walls are important for plants. | The cell wall surrounds the cell membrane and separates the cell from the environment. It also contains cellulose which makes the walls rigid. |
| List the five things that a plant needs to survive on land | water, support their bodies, transport materials, reproduce, retain water. |
| Label a plant cell diagram and why it’s different from an animal cell. | Plant cells have chloroplast, cell walls, and a larger vacuole. |
| Differences between plant and animal cells | Plant cells have chloroplast, cell walls, and a larger vacuole . |
