Chapter 3 plants
lesson 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chlorophyll | green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria |
| Differences between plant and animal cells | plant cells have chloroplast, cell walls , and a larger vacuole |
| Photosynthesis | The process by which plants and some other organisms capture the energy in sunlight and use it to make food |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a specific function |
| Chloroplast | A structure in cells of plants in some other organisms that capture energy from sun light and uses it to make food |
| Vacuole | A sac inside a cell that acts as a storage area |
| Cuticle | The waxy waterproof layer that covers the leaves and stems of most plants |
| Vascular tissue | The internal transporting tissue in some plants that is made up of tooblike structures that carry water, food and minerals |
| Organelle | A tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| Chromatin | Strands that contain genetic material that help direct the cell’s function |
| Mitochondrion | Structures that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out it’s functions |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | a cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another |
| Lysosomes | A small, round cell structure containing chemicals that breakdown large food particles into smaller ones |
| Golgi body | A structure in a cell that receives proteins in other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them and distributes them into other parts of the cell |
| 3 characteristics of all plants | they are autotrophs with many cells. In addition, all plant cells are surrounded by cell walls |
| 2 things a plant needs and 2 things it makes during photosynthesis | Photosynthesis = food and oxygen Needs= sunlight and water |
| 2 reasons why cell walls are important for plants | They contain a vacuole and chloroplast |
| The 5 things a plant needs to survive | 1. Have ways to obtain water and other nutrients from their surroundings 2. Retain water 3. Support their bodies 4. Transport materials 5. Reproduce |
