Cell Cycle & Mitosis

Cell Cycle An ordered sequence of events in the life of a cell, from its origin to its division into two daughter cells.
Interphase The period of the cell cycle during which the cell is not dividing but is preparing for division (includes G1, S, & G2 phases)
Mitosis The process of nuclear division in eukaryotic cells, divided into four stages: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase.
Cytokinesis The division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells after mitosis.
Cancer Uncontrolled cell division due to disruptions in normal cell Cycle regulation.
Somatic Cell Body cell. Any cell in a multicellular organism except a sperm or egg cell.
Apoptosis Programmed cell death, a normal part of development and health maintenance in multicellular organisms.
Gamete A haploid reproductive cell (egg or sperm).
Diploid (2n) A cell containing two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.
Haploid (n) A cell containing only one set of chromosomes.
