the cell cycle and mitosis

| cell cycle | an ordered sequence of events in the life in a cell, from its origin to its division into two daughter cells |
| interphase | the period of the cell cycle during which the cell is not dividing but is preparing for its division (includes G1, S, and G2 phases) |
| mitosis | the process of nuclear division in eukaryotic cells, divided into four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. |
| cytokinesis | the division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells after mitosis |
| cancer | uncontrolled cell division due to disruptions in normal cell cycle regulation |
| somatic cell | body cell. any cell in a multicellular organism except a sperm or egg cell. |
| apoptosis | programmed cell death, a normal part of development and health maintenance in multicellular organisms |
| gamete | a haploid reproductive cell (egg or sperm) |
| diploid (2n) | a cell containing two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent |
| haploid (n) | a cell containing only one set of chromosomes |
