|---|---|
| Nucleus | Control centre of the cell. Contains the DNA of the organism & controls the cell's activities |
| DNA | genetic material that is unique to an organism. Provides instructions to build and maintain the organism. |
| Cell | the smallest structure of an organism |
| organism | a living thing - plant, animal, bacterium, fungus |
| Cytoplasm | Liquid (mostly water) that makes up most of the cell. Chemical reactions take place within it |
| Cell Membrane | Flexible outer layer - surrounds the cell and controls which substances can pass through it. |
| Mitochondria | Tiny cell parts floating in the cytoplasm where a) energy from glucose in food is released, & b) most respiration happens |
| Respiration | A chemical reaction that happens in the mitochondria of cells: glucose and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing energy. |
| Respiration Word Equation | Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water (Energy) |
