| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| allele | a version (variety) of a gene (ex: gene=eye color, allele=blue,green, brown) |
| genotype | the exact gene combination (letters) an organism has |
| phenotype | the physical trait you see (ex: brown eyes, blonde hair) |
| homozygous | having two of the same alleles (ex: AA or aa) |
| heterozygous | having two different alleles (ex: Aa or Bb) |
| dominant allele | the stronger allele that shows if it is present in the genotype; represented by upper case letter |
| recessive allele | the hidden allele, must have 2 to show that trait, represented by lower case ;letter (ex: aa) |
| DNA | the molecule that carries the instructions for life |
| chromosome | the condensed DNA that carries genes |
| gene | the section of DNA that controls one trait |
| karyotype | the picture showing chromosomes arranged in pairs |
| punnett square | a simple table that uses the alleles (versions of a gene) of two parents to predict the possible genetic combinations and the likelihood of specific traits (phenotypes) in their offspring |
| Homozygous dominant | a genotype where 2 dominant alleles are present (AA,BB) |
| Homozygous recessive | a genotype where 2 recessive alleles are present (aa,pp) |
