Palm Oil & Biodiversity major cause of deforestation (especially tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia). Destroys orangutan habitat.
Old Growth Forest untouched, ancient forests with complex biodiversity. <10% left in U.S.
Deforestation clearing of forests for agriculture, logging, development.
Harvesting Types Clear-cutting = worst (removes all trees). Selective cutting = better (removes some). Strip cutting = moderate.
Grassland Disturbance natural fires & grazing maintain balance. Preventing disturbance → shrub/forest takeover.
Threats to Grasslands agriculture, overgrazing, desertification.
Rotational Grazing moving livestock between pastures to mimic natural migration & prevent overuse
Parks & Preserves protect biodiversity, ecosystem services, recreation, carbon storage.
Damaged Biomes mostly in developing nations (tropics) due to high exploitation.
Ecotourism sustainable tourism that provides economic incentive to protect biodiversity.
Reducing Habitat Fragmentation wildlife corridors, buffer zones, land-use planning.
