EB- Chapter 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Palm Oil & Biodiversity | major cause of deforestation (especially tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia). Destroys orangutan habitat. |
| Old Growth Forest | untouched, ancient forests with complex biodiversity. <10% left in U.S. |
| Deforestation | clearing of forests for agriculture, logging, development. |
| Harvesting Types | Clear-cutting = worst (removes all trees). Selective cutting = better (removes some). Strip cutting = moderate. |
| Grassland Disturbance | natural fires & grazing maintain balance. Preventing disturbance → shrub/forest takeover. |
| Threats to Grasslands | agriculture, overgrazing, desertification. |
| Rotational Grazing | moving livestock between pastures to mimic natural migration & prevent overuse |
| Parks & Preserves | protect biodiversity, ecosystem services, recreation, carbon storage. |
| Damaged Biomes | mostly in developing nations (tropics) due to high exploitation. |
| Ecotourism | sustainable tourism that provides economic incentive to protect biodiversity. |
| Reducing Habitat Fragmentation | wildlife corridors, buffer zones, land-use planning. |
