| Reproduction | the process by which living things give rise to offspring. |
| Homeostasis | the process of maintaining a stable internal environment. |
| Cell | the basic unit of the structure and function of living things. |
| Cell theory | all living things are made up of cells, and living cells always come from other living cells |
| Gene theory | the idea that the characteristics of living things are controlled by genes, which are passed from parents to their offspring. |
| Evolution | a change in the characteristics of living things over time. |
| Natural selection | living things produce more offspring than others, so they pass more genes to the next generation than others do. |
| Adaptation | a characteristic that helps a living thing survive and reproduce in a given environment. |
| Organism | an individual living thing. |
| Symbiosis | a close relationship between organisms of different species in which at least one of the organisms benefits. |
| Competition | a relationship between living things that depend on the same resources. |
| Tissue | group of cells of the same kind |
| Organ | structure composed of one or more types of tissue |
| Organ system | group of organs that work together to do a certain job |
| Population | organisms of the same species that live in the same area |
| Community | all of the populations that live in the same area. |
| Ecosystem | consists of all the living things in a given area, together with the nonliving environment. |
| Biosphere | the part of Earth where all life exists. |
| Biome | a group of similar ecosystems with the same general type of physical environment. |
| Biodiversity | the diversity of living things |
