What parts make up the Central nervous system? Brain and spinal cord
What divisions make up the Peripheral nervous system? Somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
What is the Somatic nervous system? Functions managed by thought
What is the Autonomic nervous system? Functions managed without thought
What nerve systems are in both Somatic and Autonomic nervous systems? Afferent and Efferent nerves
Where does the Sympathetic nervous system take place? The efferent nerves of the Autonomic nervous system
What does the Sympathetic nervous system do? Stress
What does the Parasympathetic nervous system do? Destress
What do efferent nerves do? Send signals from the Central Nervous System
What do afferent nerves do? Send signals to the Central Nervous System
What are meninges? Layers of protection for the brain
What are the 3 layers of meninges? Dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater
What layer is the dura mater? Outer layer
What layer is the arachnoid? Middle layer
What layer is the pia mater? Inner layer
What is meningitis? Inflammation of the membranes and fluid around the CNS
What is meningioma? Tumor that grows from the membranes around the CNS
What is Subarachnoid Hemorrhage? Bleeding in the subarachnoid space, between the brain and membranes
Where is cerebrospinal fluid located? Subarachnoid space, central canal of the spinal cord, and the cerebral ventricles
What is the function of cerebrospinal fluid? Protection and buoyancy
What are the types of ventricles? Lateral, third, fourth, and central canal
What do ventricles do? Produce and store cerebrospinal fluid
What is Hydrocephalus? Blockage of aqueduct leading to building of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain
How does the blood-brain barrier protect the brain? Tightly packed cells and active transport for large molecules
What ventricles are located at the top of the brain? Lateral ventricles
What ventricle connects to the lateral ventricles? Third ventricle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
