| cardiac muscle | self-stimulating striated muscle found in the heart |
| contract (verb) | The active shortening of a muscle |
| diaphragm | thick sheet of muscle that separates thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity, responsible for breathing |
| ligament | tissue that joins bones to other bones |
| muscle | soft, contractile tissue found in animals in order to produce motion; about a third of a person’s weight |
| muscular system | body system that functions together with the skeletal & nervous system to make movement possible |
| neuromuscular junction | Place where a nerve meets a muscle cell |
| sarcomere | overlapping protein fibers that give skeletal muscle its straited appearance |
| skeletal muscle | muscle whose primary function is to move parts of skeleton |
| smooth muscle | involuntary muscles lining tubes like blood vessels |
| tendon | cable of fibers that attach muscle to bone |
| voluntary muscle | Muscles that you can control directly |
