| appendicular skeleton | division of the skeletal system that includes shoulders, hips, & appendage |
| axial skeleton | division of the skeletal system that includes head, spine, and rib cage |
| cartilage | tough rubbery connective tissue that cushions joints between bones |
| compact bone | most dense form of bone, makes the outer layer of bone |
| femur | thigh bone, largest bone of body |
| growth plates | areas of new bone growth made of cartilages; hardens into solid bone |
| Haversian canals | hollow center of bones where nerves and blood vessels are found |
| lacunae | black dots in compact bone that contain osteoblasts and osteoclasts |
| marrow | Living tissue inside long bones that makes blood cells |
| ossification | process by which cartilage is replace with bone |
| osteoblast | Cells that make bone |
| osteoclast | A bone cell that breaks down calcium mineral in bone |
| skeletal system | body system that provides support and rigidity; framework for body |
| spongy bone | lightweight porous tissues that gives bone lots of strength without lots of mass or weight |
