Biology Chapter 3
Cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 3 basic parts of cell theory | Cells are the basic unit of life All organisms are comprised of one or more cells Cells only arise from other cells |
| Prokaryotes | without organelles - archaea and bacteria |
| Eukaryotes | with organelles - Domain Eukarya |
| Plasma membrane | a semipermeable membrane that surrounds all cells |
| Cytoplasm | Interior of the cell |
| Ribosome | a two-part structure in all cells where proteins are synthesized |
| Nucleoid | location of the DNA in a prokaryotic cell |
| Cell wall | provides support and protection to a prokaryotic cell, very hydrophilic |
| Pathogen | an organism that causes disease |
| Capsule | highly-organized polysaccharide, provides additional protection to prokaryotes |
| Fimbriae | short, hair-like protein structures on a prokaryote, act as a means of attachment |
| Flagellum | a slender protein structure used by many cells to move around |
| 6 components to a flagellum | export apparatus basal body/stators hook junction zone filament cap |
