Ecology 2.1

TermDefinition
Trophic Level Each step in a food chain or food web often diagramed in an energy pyramid
Abiotic Factor The non-living parts of an organism's habitat.
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
Food Web A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains.
Photosynthesis Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars.
10% rule States that 10% of the energy in one trophic level passes onto the next trophic level.
Biosphere Made up of all life on Earth & all parts of the Earth in which life exists.
Niche An organism's particular role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living (gets food).
Scavenger A carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms.
Energy Pyramid Diagram that shows the energy moving from one feeding level to another in a food chain
Community All the different populations that live together in an area.
Producer An organism that can make its own food.
Biotic Factor The living parts of an organism’s environment
Food Chain A series of feeding events where organisms eat another organism to obtain energy.
Biomass The total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms & their physical environment.
Cellular Respiration The process by which organism's use oxygen to produce energy from food
Habitat The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.
Biome A group of ecosystems that share similar climates and typical organisms
Decomposer An organism that breaks down waste and dead organisms.
Species A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Population A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
