Scientific Method Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| observation | the act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way. |
| inference | a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know. |
| hypothesis | a tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation. |
| controlled experiment | all other variables that are kept unchanged, or controlled. |
| independent variable | the variable deliberately changed. |
| dependent variable | the variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable. |
| control group | a group exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable. |
| data | information |
| theory | a larger and more useful understanding of how the world works. |
| bias | a personal, rather than scientific, point of view for, or, against, something. |
| biology | the science that employs scientific methodology to study living things. |
| sexual reproduction | cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism. |
| asexual reproduction | the new organism has a single parent. |
| DNA | the genetic code that determines the inherited traits of every organism on Earth. |
| metabolism | the combination of chemical reactions as it carries out its life processes. |
| stimulus | a signal to which an organism responds. |
| homeostasis | the relatively constant set of conditions |
| evolve | change over time. |
