Scientific Method Vocabulary

TermDefinition
observation the act of noticing and describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way.
inference a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
hypothesis a tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation.
controlled experiment all other variables that are kept unchanged, or controlled.
independent variable the variable deliberately changed.
dependent variable the variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable.
control group a group exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for changes in the independent variable.
data information
theory a larger and more useful understanding of how the world works.
bias a personal, rather than scientific, point of view for, or, against, something.
biology the science that employs scientific methodology to study living things.
sexual reproduction cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism.
asexual reproduction the new organism has a single parent.
DNA the genetic code that determines the inherited traits of every organism on Earth.
metabolism the combination of chemical reactions as it carries out its life processes.
stimulus a signal to which an organism responds.
homeostasis the relatively constant set of conditions
evolve change over time.
