Intro to Biology of Fishes

Abyssal The benthic environment in the ocean that exists below 4,000 meters, exclusive of trenches. Sometimes referred to as the abyssal plane.
Abyssopelagic The pelagic zone of oceanic waters that is deeper than 4,000 meters but not within trenches.
Anadromous An animal that lives as an adult in the ocean but returns to freshwater to spawn.
Apomorphic An evolutionarily advanced or derived character.
Bathyal The benthic environment in the ocean that exists between 1,000 and 4,000 meters, also referred to as the continental rise.
Bathypelagic The pelagic zone of oceanic waters between 1,000 and 4,000 meters
Benthic The seafloor
Catadromous An animal that lives as an adult in freshwater but migrates to the ocean to spawn.
Demersal Associated with the seafloor but not on the seafloor
Diadromous A fish that spends part of its life in freshwater and part of its life in saltwater
Epipelagic The pelagic zone of oceanic waters from the surface down to 200 meters
Extant A taxon with living representatives on earth today
Extinct A taxon that was once alive on earth but no longer is.
Hadal The benthic environment in the ocean that is within ocean trenches.
Hadopelaigc The pelagic zone of oceanic waters that occurs within the ocean trenches.
Intertidal The coastal environment between low and high tide, sometimes called the literal zone.
Lacustrine Of or pertaining to lakes
Mesopelagic The zone of oceanic waters that is from 200 to 1,000 meters.
Neritic The pelagic realm of the ocean that occurs over the continental shelf.
Oceanic The pelagic realm of the ocean that occurs seaward of the continental shelf break.
Pelagic In the water column
Pleisomorphic A primitive or ancient character; not derived or evolutionarily advanced.
Riverine Of or pertaining to rivers
Subtidal The benthic environment of the continental shelf that is seaward of the mean extent to low tide.
