| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| groundwater | water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers |
| surface water | water that is on the surface of the earth, like in lakes, rivers, and oceans |
| watershed | the geographical area where all the water and rain flows down and collects into a common outlet (like a lake) |
| aquifer | an underground formation that contains groundwater between the soil and rocks |
| water table | the level below which the ground is saturated with water. |
| hydrologist | scientist who studies the distribution and movement of water |
| saturated zone | the area under the ground that is completely filled with water (where no more water can be absorbed) |
| unsaturated zone | the layer above the water table in which the ground is not completely filled with water (it has room for more!) |
