WI-02 Watersheds & Aquifers

TermDefinition
groundwater water that fills the cracks and spaces in underground soil and rock layers
surface water water that is on the surface of the earth, like in lakes, rivers, and oceans
watershed the geographical area where all the water and rain flows down and collects into a common outlet (like a lake)
aquifer an underground formation that contains groundwater between the soil and rocks
water table the level below which the ground is saturated with water.
hydrologist scientist who studies the distribution and movement of water
saturated zone the area under the ground that is completely filled with water (where no more water can be absorbed)
unsaturated zone the layer above the water table in which the ground is not completely filled with water (it has room for more!)
