| Nasopharynx | the upper part of the pharynx, connecting with the nasal cavity above the soft palate. |
| Pulmonary Surfactant | A substance in the lungs composed of lipids and proteins that reduces surface tension in the alveoli, the air sacs, preventing them from collapsing during exhalation and facilitating gas exchange. |
| Thyroid Cartilage | The largest cartilage of the larynx and is the one that gives the characteristic triangular shape to its anterior wall. |
| Bronchi | Treelike branching of airways 23 levels of branching, producing a huge number of individual airways. |
| Tidal Volume | The volume of air inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing (around 500 mL in adults). |
| Vital Capacity | The maximum amount of air that can be inhaled or exhaled. |
| Spirometer | This is used to measure the volume of air exchanged in breathing. |
| Total Lung Capacity | The total amount of air the lungs can hold (the sum of all lung volumes, approximately 6000 mL). |
| Plasma | A yellowish fluid in blood that carries blood cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. |
| Cardiomyopathy | Disease of cardiac muscle (i.e., the myocardium), resulting in loss of pumping efficiency. |
