| SNS | somatic nervous system: part of the PNS, controls VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT of skeletal muscles, transmits sensory info such as pain |
| PNS | peripheral nervous system: part of nervous system outside of brain & spinal cord, connects SNS to limbs, organs, & tissues, divided into SNS & ANS |
| ANS | autonomic nervous system: part of PNS, regulates INVOLUNTARY body functions such as breathing, heart, digestion, divided into PARASYMPATHETIC & SYMPATHETIC |
| MEMBRANE POTENTIAL | electrical voltage difference across a cell's membrane, caused by unequal distribution of ions inside & outside of cell |
| ACTH | Adrenocorticotropic Hormone: produced by anterior pituitary gland, stimulates adrenal cortex to release cortisol |
| ARTERY | blood vessel that carries blood away from heart to the rest of the body |
| CAPILLARY | smallest type of blood vessel, exchange of gases, nutrients, & waste |
| ANASTOMOSIS | connection or joining between two structures, such as blood vessels, organs, etc, |
| LYMPH | clear/slightly yellow fluid that circulates the lymphatic system, helps fight infection, remove waste, & maintain fluid balance |
| AMYLASE | digestive enzyme, breaks down starches into simple sugars, produced by salivary glands & pancreas |
