SNS somatic nervous system: part of the PNS, controls VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT of skeletal muscles, transmits sensory info such as pain
PNS peripheral nervous system: part of nervous system outside of brain & spinal cord, connects SNS to limbs, organs, & tissues, divided into SNS & ANS
ANS autonomic nervous system: part of PNS, regulates INVOLUNTARY body functions such as breathing, heart, digestion, divided into PARASYMPATHETIC & SYMPATHETIC
MEMBRANE POTENTIAL electrical voltage difference across a cell's membrane, caused by unequal distribution of ions inside & outside of cell
ACTH Adrenocorticotropic Hormone: produced by anterior pituitary gland, stimulates adrenal cortex to release cortisol
ARTERY blood vessel that carries blood away from heart to the rest of the body
CAPILLARY smallest type of blood vessel, exchange of gases, nutrients, & waste
ANASTOMOSIS connection or joining between two structures, such as blood vessels, organs, etc,
LYMPH clear/slightly yellow fluid that circulates the lymphatic system, helps fight infection, remove waste, & maintain fluid balance
AMYLASE digestive enzyme, breaks down starches into simple sugars, produced by salivary glands & pancreas
